Well, I have to say that with all the news of the economy, home foreclosures, and abandoned pets as a result, it was awfully nice to read about Sophie Tucker surviving four months on a deserted island. No, this isn't the latest episode of Survivor and no we're not talking about Sophie Tucker the late entertainer. We're talking about Sophie Tucker the Australian Cattle dog who fell overboard in rough seas off the coast of Australia when sailing with her family last November.
Sadly, Sophie's family assumed she had drowned when they couldn't find her after she fell overboard. Fortunately, Sophie was a strong swimmer and had actually paddled five nautical miles to a small deserted island where she proceeded to live off the land and apparently, a few baby goats. I have to wonder if the folks on Survivor would have been as resourceful as Sophie was. Leave it to an Australian Cattle dog.
The good news is that there is a very happy ending to this story. After four months, Rangers spotted Sophie and rescued her. Hearing of this, Sophie's family called the Rangers and found out it was indeed Sophie who had been rescued. In the end, everyone was happily reunited!!
As always, there is a lesson to be learned here. While Sophie was lucky to survive and ultimately be reunited with her family, this isn't always the case.
